Electrical safety questions

I don’t know when my fuseboard was last tested. What should I do?

The consumer unit is only part of the electrical installation. If you do not know when the fixed electrics were last inspected, ask a qualified electrician whether an EICR is appropriate. Do not remove the consumer-unit cover yourself.

My RCD keeps tripping. What should I do?

Repeated tripping can have several causes and should not be ignored. Avoid dismantling accessories or the consumer unit and arrange professional fault finding if it persists.

What warning signs need prompt attention?

Burning smells, smoke, heat, visible scorching, shocks or persistent tripping need prompt attention. If there is fire, smoke or immediate danger, move away and call 999 where appropriate.
